Our Nightmare Health Care System in One Doctor’s Bill

December 24, 2019

This is only the tip of an enormous iceberg. Those who think our health care system is not in need of radical revision are obviously unaware of the prevalence of situations like that described in this article – or even worse. How much of this is unknown to the general public? I’d say it must be hidden from most of us. Much of it is hidden by the fact that insurance (private and/or public) covers most of it, but even that seems to be bursting at the seams with increasing inability of even insured folks to cover deductibles.

Medicare for All may or may not rectify much of this. It will be extremely expensive to continue with the status quo, with increasing numbers of people unable to get the care they need because they simply don’t have the financial means to pay for procedures, tests, drugs, you name it.  Placing a larger burden in terms of cost on those least able to pay for it was a problem we were trying to solve with the Affordable Care Act. Dismantling what remains of that without doing something to rectify the inequality exacerbated by that process, as Trump and the GOP (along with the health care industry’s lobbyists} seem determined to do is neither fair nor acceptable to the vast majority of people in this country. We need to get serious about rectifying this situation. – rjc

American healthcare gets more insidiously outrageous all the time.

  1. America doesn’t have a health CARE system. We have a health INSURANCE system. Not the same thing. The first question we ask anyone needing health CARE isn’t “how can we help you?”, it’s “How’re you gonna pay for this?”
